McLaren St. Luke’s Transition

After more than a century of providing health care services to the Maumee community, McLaren St. Luke’s hospital will discontinue operations after years of declining utilization and revenues, and the lingering impact of COVID-19.

Despite the hard work of the hospital’s Board of Directors, leadership team and all those committed to its viability, the hospital has not been able to rebound from these challenges. St. Luke’s experienced a 30% decline in community use of its services between 2020 and 2022 and can no longer sustain significant monthly financial losses.

Subsequent to the hospital’s closure, Mercy Health will acquire the McLaren St. Luke’s facilities, land and physical assets, pending final due diligence, with plans to restore some outpatient services later this year. As part of the agreement, Mercy Health expects to extend employment opportunities to a significant percentage of McLaren St. Luke’s physicians and employees.

We are grateful for our dedicated team of employees, nurses, physicians, and volunteers for their tireless service to our patients. You bring the very best to our hospital every day. We’re grateful for our community – our friends and neighbors – for allowing us to serve as your trusted health care partner for more than 100 years.

Additional Frequently Asked Questions

  • What exactly is happening?

Working closely with hospital leadership, the McLaren St. Luke’s Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to close the hospital and its outpatient services. Subsequently, McLaren Health Care will enter into an agreement with Bon Secours Mercy Health, which will purchase the facilities, land, and physical assets of McLaren St. Luke’s, pending final due diligence. The transaction is expected to be completed by mid-May. Mercy Health will work with WellCare Physicians Group practices through the transition with the goal of maintaining continuity of patient care.

  • Why is McLaren St. Luke’s closing?

Despite the hard work and commitment of our board of directors, physicians, leadership, and employees, the hospital has not been able to rebound from various financial challenges and declines in patient volumes. We experienced a 30% decline in community use of our services between 2020 and 2022. That decline continues to accelerate, and we are now on track to lose $37 million this year.

  • How will this transaction affect health care services in the community?

Maumee residents will have continued, convenient access to care. Emergency, inpatient, and outpatient services are available at various hospitals nearby.
