Meet McLaren: Bariatrics

Greater Lansing area patients have access to a high-quality, accredited program should they choose to pursue bariatric surgery with the guidance of their primary care physician. 

The program’s telemedicine capabilities make it possible for patients to receive most of their care close to home. Much of the surgical weight loss journey can occur through virtual visits with the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute team and the support of their primary care physician. Surgical procedures will take place at McLaren Flint. 

The Institute is recognized as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program. 

TREATMENTS AND PROCEDURES   

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass: This procedure reduces the size of the stomach to create a small pouch which becomes completely separate from the remainder of the stomach. 

Sleeve Gastrectomy: Laparoscopic surgical procedure in which the stomach is remodeled into a long tube about one-quarter the size of the original stomach. 

CANDIDATES FOR WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY 

• 100 pounds or more above ideal body weight
• BMI of 40 or greater or a BMI of 35 or greater with one or more obesity-related health condition(s) 
• Other forms of weight control failed Over 18 years of age
