THERE ARE OPTIONS - THERE IS HOPE.
McLaren Bay Region is the first in the Great Lakes Bay Region to offer a day treatment program for adult patients age 18 and over who are in need of a highly structured, short term psychiatric program that is similar in nature and intensity to that provided in an inpatient hospital setting. This program provides the most intense level of non-residential, non-inpatient care that is available within McLaren Bay Region network of treatment programs.
PHP is designed to allow intervention to prevent inpatient psychiatric hospitalization or provide transition for patients stepping down from inpatient care. Patients are assigned to a case manager to assist them through the treatment program, help patients identify methods to meet their treatment team goals, and assist with follow up appointments when indicated.
We treat psychiatric disorders such as:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Bipolar
- Personality disorder
- Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
- Substance abuse treatment with a primary mental health disorder
- Other disorders as determined by assessment
WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR THE PHP PROGRAM? Care at the PHP level is designed for individuals who meet one of the two following criteria:
- People who have completed inpatient or residential treatment for a mental health disorder and can benefit from a structured level of step-down support as they transition to a more independent lifestyle.
- People who have mental, behavioral, or substance-related needs that do not rise to the level of requiring inpatient mental health admission, but would likely progress to a level of danger or failure of self care that would require inpatient treatment without a structured treatment setting.
REFERRALS
A professional referral is preferred for admission to PHP. This can include a primary care physician, emergency room physician, nurse, social worker, therapist, and court personnel. Call (989) 667-6231 to determine the level of care needed and complete an intake assessment. Please allow 24-48 hours for processing of referral and admission to unit, excluding weekends and holidays.
When a referring professional wants to recommend someone to McLaren Bay Region's PHP it is important to have:
- Patient's name and basic information
- Current clinical symptoms/reason for referral
- Medication List
- Insurance information
- Signed release of information consent to release information to PHP and referring provider
We will strive to have patients sign appropriate consents so we can answer questions or address concerns with outpatient professionals. Our philosophy of clinical communication includes notification of patient arrival and disposition during the intake process, contact by clinical case management staff shortly after admission to the program and as needed through the patient stay, and coordination of discharge planning information at the end of the patient stay.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Q: Do I have to stay if I don't feel comfortable at first?
A: PHP is a voluntary program. We hope you will stay because we know PHP can help you. It is normal to feel uncomfortable the first few days. We encourage you to talk to staff and to focus on the coping skills you can use to help yourself. If you do decide to leave the program, please talk to staff first.
Q: What is group therapy?
A: Group therapy is a time to talk about thoughts, feelings, and problems. The group therapist will lead the group and the goal is for staff to help you help yourself.
Q: What is a family session?
A: A family session is a simple meeting designed to bring you and your family and/or friends together to gain support and understanding. Nothing you have told us in confidence before the family session will be discussed unless you bring it up. Issues discussed can include your progress, family issues, education about your disorder, relapse prevention, and continuing recovery after discharge.
Q: Do I have to have a family session?
A: A family session is not mandatory, but your disorder probably affects other family members. Including your family is one way we have found to speed recovery and avoid relapse.
Q: What is Dual Diagnosis or Co-Occurring Disorder?
A: Dual Diagnosis/Co-Occurring Disorders are for clients who have substance abuse disorders as well as mental health disorders.
Q: How long do I have to be here?
A: You will be discharged from the program once you have met the goals outlined in your personalized Treatment Plan. Each person is different and Treatment Plans are individualized. Our goal is to make sure you are on the road to recovery and are equipped with the necessary coping mechanisms to manage your mental health on an out-patient basis.
