Diabetes Education Class Information

What to bring with you:
- A list of your current medications, including insulin doses
- Your blood sugar log and your glucose meter
- Your health insurance card and driver's license.
Helpful class information
- A friend or family member may attend with you as a guest without charge.
- We will be performing a foot exam. You may find it easier to wear slip-on shoes.
- We will be checking your blood pressure and blood sugar at class. You do not need to fast for the blood sugar check.
Group classes last three hours, however, we do take a break in the middle. We suggest a meal or snack before coming to class to prevent a long delay in eating.
Class Schedules and descriptions
Topics covered in the diabetes self-care education series include:
- Diabetes diagnosis and progression;
- Meal planning and carbohydrate counting;
- Understanding your blood sugar numbers;
- Preventing complications;
- Stress management;
- Goal setting.
Support groups are available, along with classes for:
- Juvenile diabetes;
- Gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy);
- Using insulin pumps and glucose monitors;
- Administering insulin and other injectible medications;
- Individual sessions arranged by appointment.
Bay's Diabetes Self-Care Education Program is certified by the Michigan Department of Community Health, and has met educational standards set by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE).
