Speech therapy is the study of communication and swallowing problems. Speech-language pathologists assist with problems involving speech, voice, language, and swallowing. Communication problems can be present at birth or develop after an injury or illness, like a stroke, head injury, or cancer.
Our speech therapists now offer Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS) which can be an outpatient procedure performed by a speech-language pathologist and radiologist. The MBSS is completed to assess the function of a swallow and movement of food and liquids from the oral cavity to the upper esophageal area. This exam provides us with information regarding aspiration risk and epiglottic inversion. An appropriate diet will be determined based on results.
We also offer Laryngeal Videostrobe exams which is a painless, outpatient procedure that is performed to look at the function and motion of the vocal folds. This exam provides useful real-time information concerning the nature of vocal fold vibrations and images to better detect vocal pathology.
