McLaren Northern Michigan Urologist Becomes State’s Most Proficient Provider of Procedure Relieving Common Condition in Men

Dr. Matthew Rohloff, a urologist with McLaren Northern Michigan, part of statewide McLaren Health Care, ended June having performed more UroLift procedures in any single month than any other urologist in the state.

Relieving the symptoms of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), a very common, noncancerous enlargement of the prostate, his proficiency in the procedure and prevalence of the condition led to Dr. Rohloff successfully completing 29 Prostatic Urethral Lift, commonly referred to as a UroLift, procedures in the month.

Affecting more than 50 percent of men over age 50, symptoms of BPH leave those afflicted with the quality-of-life-limiting symptoms of frequent and difficult urination. Representatives from UroLift manufacturer Teleflex Interventional Urology were present to confirm Dr. Rohloff’s accomplishment and proficient month.

“The aim of becoming proficient in any procedure is never to achieve any sort of personal accolade, but rather always to treat every individual patient and return them to a quality of life they knew before their condition,” Dr. Rohloff said. “The true accomplishment is that we were able to help so many people in this amount of time, and any achievement is shared among an outstanding surgical team.”

An endoscopic procedure, the UroLift system is placed in the urethra and guided to the area obstructed by the enlarged prostate. The obstructive tissue is moved aside, and implants are deployed to hold the prostate in its new, unobstructive position.

“His steadfast dedication to his patients certainly played a significant role in Dr. Rohloff’s ability to achieve this level of proficiency, and his is a trait that proves advantageous to his patients,” said Dr. Brad Ropp, McLaren Medical Group Chief Medical Officer. “With exceptional precision and an intricate understanding of BPH, Dr. Rohloff’s achievement extends beyond a number, but rather the undoubtable improvement he has made in the lives of his patients.”

Performed in an outpatient setting, patients can return home the same day as the procedure avoids heating, cutting, or removing any tissue.

“We could not be prouder of Dr. Rohloff and the McLaren Northern Michigan surgical team,” said Erik Dahlstrom, a urology consultant with Teleflex Interventional Urology. “BPH is a real concern for many men, and he and the team’s skill in this procedure, pursuit of surgical technique perfection, and commitment to attaining the best possible surgical outcomes to their patients made this achievement possible.”

The most common benign tumor found in men, more than half the men between ages 51 to 60 experience the symptoms of BPH. With more than 40 million men projected to reach 60 in the next 10 years, its prevalence will only increase, as will the condition’s symptoms:

  • Weak urinary stream
  • Starting/Stopping urination
  • Frequent urination
  • Urinary incontinence
