The 9th Annual McLaren Bay Medical Foundation 5K Run/Walk presented by United Bay Community Credit Union was held on May 4, 2024!
We were thrilled to spend Saturday morning at our charming Uptown Bay City location for a day of fitness, fun, and fundraising. Over 420 youth and adults registered for this highly anticipated race!
As the morning greeted us with some drizzle, a light breeze, and 47 degree temps, Scott Stine from WHNN got our blood pumping with some upbeat music and announcements! Racers gathered under the big Dow sponsored tent to chat with event sponsors, gather treasures, and prepare for race day.
After a "Welcome" from race chairman Dr. Andrew Bayci, 400 racers sprinted, jogged, power-walked, and strolled across the start line to begin their 3.1 mile journey along the foggy riverfront.
McLaren's own Lance Krager served as the marshal, guiding racers along the route and having to keep pace with the fastest! Special thanks to Linda Flues and Ted Davenport from the Bay Area Runners Club for the development of the race route and lending and setup of cones to mark crucial points.
Volunteers along the route gave direction, cheered for the racers, and kept them hydrated at water stations provided by Drink Water Sponsors 1st State Bank, Dow Bay Area Family YMCA, Fran Santoro, Real Seafood Company of Bay City, and Vantage Plastics. Mile markers represented another step closer to the finish line and were sponsored by Keep Running Sponsors Family Foot & Ankle Centers, Gephart Funeral Home, Maple Leaf Golf Course, and Titan Golf Carts.
By 9:18am, Steven Marr was the first to cross the finish line and get his finisher medal with a chip time of 17:42!
As more and more racers crossed the finish line, Uptown Bay City came to life with celebration of successes. We cheered and clapped for finishers who ranged from age 3 - 85!
Once settled back into Uptown to await results, participants replenished their bodies with nourishment from our snack and water station, provided by Dr. Libby Pionk & MaryAnne Eagle, and Shine Water.
Prize drawings and awards represented the end of a wonderful day getting active together and raising over $23,000! Through these funds the McLaren Bay Medical Foundation can continue to make a positive difference in the lives of our patients and the communities we serve. Every dollar given stays right here in our local area touching lives by meeting needs that go beyond the hospital’s normal operating expenses. This year, funds will be used to improve our emergency department by modernizing the waiting area and enhancing safety features.
