At McLaren Port Huron and our cancer center, Karmanos Cancer Institute, we understand that making your way through a cancer diagnosis can be a stressful and scary time. The Karmanos Cancer Institute provides all our patients with carefully constructed and dynamic treatments focused on the person’s specific cancer diagnosis and individual needs. We listen to our patients in a respectful, caring, and compassionate manner, so that we are sure to understand all emotional and practical concerns that are held.
More than 30 years ago, McLaren Port Huron created a Women’s Health program, now Demashkieh Women’s Wellness Place, and our philosophy focused on addressing the unique needs of women. Our philosophy focused on the infinite worth of a woman in relationship to herself, her family, and to society. We recognize a woman’s unique and changing needs in all stages of her life. We are dedicated to meeting these needs with the respect and dignity she deserves through information and access to services designed to enhance her physical, mental and social well-being. This philosophy is especially important during cancer treatment.
You may be thinking that your appearance should be the least of your worries as you begin navigating your cancer treatment. But caring for your appearance can boost your self-image and help you feel better about yourself.
At McLaren Port Huron, we are helping women cope during their cancer journey through our Beauty & Healing program. This program teaches women about skin care, makeup application and using scarves and hats as head coverings. Participants can also choose a wig, free of charge, from our wig bank. Participants are encouraged to bring a support person, preferably female. This program is made possible by the generous community donations made to the McLaren Port Huron Foundation and the Donna M. Niester Breast Cancer Fund.
Beauty & Healing takes place the fourth Thursday of the month (no program in December) at 2 p.m. in McLaren Port Huron’s Charles Classroom (please use the Rourke Entrance). Registration is required. To register or for more information, call HealthAccess at 1-800-228-1484.
