Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is often referred to as heartburn. The American Gastroenterological Association identifies these primary GERD indicators:

• Heartburn: burning chest or throat pain after eating
• Regurgitation: sour liquid returning to mouth or throat
• Chronic cough
• Difficulty swallowing
• Chest pain
• Throat irritation
• Potential shortness of breath
