McLaren Northern Michigan, the Petoskey-based health care provider serving 22 counties, has been listed among the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals in the country, according clinical and quality analysis by Premier, a leading health care organization aimed at improving how care is delivered.
The hospital, which recently expanded its cardiovascular services by adding more providers — creating more access to its advanced level of care — has routinely ranked among the nation’s best, having been named to this list seven times in the past eight years.
The Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals list was determined following an objective and independent review of publicly available cardiac care metrics, taking into account clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, and cost.
“We are incredibly grateful to our cardiology staff for their expertise and the exceptional care they provide, but moreover we are proud to be in the position to offer this level of care to the communities we serve,” said Gar Atchison, McLaren Northern Michigan President and CEO. “We are honored to once again earn this recognition, which represents our continuing dedication and ongoing commitment to provide our region with access to high-quality care services across all specialties.”
When compared to hospitals of similar size, providers included on the list are shown to have significantly higher survival rates, fewer complications, lower readmission rates, a better overall experience, and lower costs among other exceptional statistics.
“Heart disease, in its many forms, continues to be a serious public health concern and it is crucial to address its effects on our society,” said Dr. Samer Kazziha, Chief Medical Director of the McLaren Heart & Vascular Institute. “With symptoms significantly impacting patients’ quality of life, it becomes critical for communities to have access to advanced heart care. The team at McLaren Northern Michigan has achieved that through their devotion and commitment to providing their patient with innovative care, and they are fully deserving of this recognition.”
McLaren Northern Michigan has routinely introduced leading-edge care technology and the latest procedures into the region, having added transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and WATCHMAN procedures to address common, quality-of-life-limiting and potentially life-threatening conditions. The department has expanded, recently doubling its staff through the addition of five cardiology providers, with plans to add more this year.
