Bret Stevens, an associate designated institutional official (ADIO) overseeing medical education at McLaren Oakland and McLaren St. Luke’s, has been recognized by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The ACGME, the national accrediting body for residency and fellowship programs and the institutions that sponsor them, awarded Stevens with its Graduate Medical Education Institutional Coordinator Excellence Award.
The national award “recognizes institutional coordinators who demonstrate in-depth knowledge” of graduate medical education, GME, the training programs for future attending physicians to refine their medical knowledge and gain practical-use experience.
“Bret is a strong leader, a master facilitator, a transformational thinker and a kind, thoughtful human who continually advocates for medical education,” said Dr. Erin Reis, Associate Chief Academic Officer for McLaren Health Care, in her nomination letter to the ACGME. “Bret has dedicated his career to advancing medical education through collaborative projects that engage all levels of participation. He embodies all the leadership qualities that create trust, action, and respect.”
Under his leadership, programs were developed, and initiatives introduced, that fostered excellence in meeting and exceeding ACGME requirements, promoted GME physician well-being, and improved diversity efforts throughout the continuum of physician education. And motivated to grow his colleagues’ professional development, Stevens introduced physician peer reviews and evaluation programs, and subsequent initiatives which led to interprofessional teaming and enhanced the clinical learning environments.
“I’m very fortunate to get to work alongside such intelligent and dedicated individuals, and this award is a direct result of our entire team’s contribution towards our shared goal of creating the best learning environment for our physicians in training,” Stevens said. “I’m unbelievably honored to receive this recognition, and it’s one that I proudly share with our Academic Affairs team.”
