McLaren Lapeer Region hospital, part of the Karmanos Cancer Network, the largest provider of cancer care throughout Michigan, is hosting a series of screenings for common cancers among men and women.
Committed to promoting early cancer detection, screenings are free of charge and available to all community members.
“Through accessible and thorough screenings, cancers are able to be diagnosed earlier and patients can receive the advantage of beginning their treatment sooner,” said Tim Vargas, McLaren Lapeer Region President and CEO. “Moreover, we believe it is our duty as stewards for the health and wellbeing of our community to organize these screenings and make a significant and positive impact on our community’s collective fight against this disease.”
Clinical Breast Screening
Oct. 18 and Oct. 24
3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
A visual and physical clinical breast exam performed by McLaren Lapeer Region general and breast surgeons to detect any abnormalities. Women in their 20s and 30s are recommended to have one every three years, while all women should have one performed every year beginning at age 40.
Prostate Cancer Screening
Oct. 23 and Nov. 6
4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
A blood test measuring prostate-specific antigen (PSA) measures the levels of a protein specific to prostate analyzed by an accredited medical lab. Men between 55 and 69 should consider a regular prostate cancer screening.
Patients will be referred for additional diagnostic testing if health care professionals discover any abnormalities during the screening.
All screenings are performed at the Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Lapeer Region (1295 Barry Drive, Suite B, near the McLaren Lapeer Region main campus) with the exception of the Nov. 6 Prostate Cancer Screening, which will be hosted at Imlay City Family Practice (6672 Newark Road in Imlay City).
Appointments can be made by calling (810) 667-5814.
