MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich.—McLaren Macomb, the first hospital in Macomb County to offer its patients the benefits of 3D tomosynthesis mammography, has added a second unit to its Breast Center. 3D tomosynthesis mammography technology, a revolutionary means of detecting breast cancer in its earliest stages, provides physicians with greater image clarity for a more accurate diagnosis.
3D mammography allows the radiologist to visualize the breast tissue in 1mm slices, making it beneficial to all women as both a screening and diagnostic tool.
“We were proud to initially introduce 3D mammograms to the area and offer it to our patients,” said Pat Keigher, regional director of cancer services at McLaren Macomb. “Our patients and physicians alike are seeing the benefits of this technology and the images it provides. Demand for this screening has increased, and it was an easy decision to add a second unit.”
The leading-edge 3D mammography technology is particularly beneficial to women with dense breast tissue, which can potentially hide tumors within its fibro-glandular structures. Dense breast tissue is very common, and a physician may recommend 3D mammograms.
The clarity provided by 3D mammography also decreases the occurrences of false positives, eliminating the anxiety of follow-up mammograms.
All mammogram images are read and interpreted by board-certified radiologists.
The purchase of the second unit was made possible by funds raised through the BRAvo for Women program.
In addition to the two 3D mammogram units at the McLaren Macomb Breast Center in Mount Clemens, 3D mammograms are also available at McLaren Macomb Diagnostic Imaging in Shelby Township and McLaren Macomb Women’s Health in Clinton Township.
