Tips to Prepare for Your Colonoscopy

Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths, but the good news is that a colonoscopy can help detect and prevent it. In honor of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month this March, it’s important to highlight how preparing for a colonoscopy is easier than you might think. In fact, it’s a simple and essential step toward maintaining your health.

A colonoscopy is the gold standard to screen for and prevent colorectal cancer. A clean colon allows the gastroenterologist to spot any abnormalities or polyps, which can be removed during the procedure, preventing cancer from developing. Although preparing for a colonoscopy is an experience, following the instructions is straightforward.

Day 1 of Prep

About three days before your procedure, start cutting back on certain foods. Avoid items like nuts, seeds, and even popcorn. You can eat tender meats such as chicken or fish but steer clear of fatty or tough meats. Whole grains, like oatmeal, cereal, granola, and shredded wheat, should also be avoided. Instead, opt for white bread, white rice, skinless potatoes, and pasta. Avoid raw vegetables and fruits, especially those with skins—say no to broccoli, corn, beans, peas, and cabbage. Your gastroenterologist might also recommend pausing any vitamins or medications until after the procedure.

Don’t forget to stay hydrated by drinking around eight ounces of water each hour throughout the day.

The Eve of the Colonoscopy

The night before your colonoscopy, it’s time to get ready by following specific instructions from your doctor. Avoid solid foods and alcohol. Stick to clear liquids such as clear broth, black coffee or tea (without cream), clear juices like apple or white grape juice, and drinks like electrolyte-replacing sports drinks. You can also have gelatin and popsicles, but avoid red or purple juices, prune juice, smoothies, milk, or dairy products.

You’ll also start taking the prescribed prep solution in the evening. Be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions closely, as you may need to drink two to four liters of an oral solution to ensure your colon is fully cleansed.

Colonoscopy Day

If you’ve followed the prep instructions by the morning of your colonoscopy, your stool should be clear or yellow. On the day of the procedure, refrain from eating, drinking, smoking or consuming any substance, including e-cigarettes or marijuana, at least three hours before the colonoscopy. Avoid chewing gum or candy as well. Your gastroenterologist might provide additional instructions depending on your specific health needs.

Remember, colonoscopies require a referral to a gastroenterologist. If you don’t have a primary care physician, McLaren has doctors accepting new patients throughout the state.
