GME Program

McLaren Northern Michigan

McLaren Northern Michigan is a 202-bed regional referral center located in Petoskey, Mich., serving residents in 22 counties across northern Lower Michigan and the eastern part of the Upper Peninsula.

More than 230 physicians represent nearly all medical and surgical specialties, enabling full-service care with an emphasis on cardiology, cancer, orthopaedics, and neurosciences. McLaren Northern Michigan is a certified Primary Stroke Center, as designated by the Joint Commission. The hospital has a network of primary care providers and specialty care clinics throughout the region, and an outpatient surgery center in Cheboygan.

Information for Applicants

The McLaren Northern Academic Primary Care Clinic is where resident physicians provide continuity care for their own panel of patients, assuming an increasing responsibility over their years of training.

The 5,907 square foot, newly remodeled clinic is physically connected to the hospital and includes:

  • 15 exam rooms
  • Procedure room

  • Resident work areas
  • Faculty offices

  • Large conference room
  • Cerner EMR

Annual Salaries (Effective 2024-2025):

PGY-1 = $57,165.00
PGY-2 = $58,879.95
PGY-3 = $60,646.35

Note: McLaren payroll is on a bi-weekly cycle.

DISCLAIMER: The Graduate Medical Education Trainee Physician Agreement is posted here as a "sample only" to give applicants an idea of what to expect as a contracted employee of McLaren. This agreement is reviewed annually and thus the language is subject to change.

An official contract will be distributed to all matched residents and fellows in the month of March for training positions starting in July-August as part of an onboarding checklist. Any off-cycle positions will receive a contract/onboarding checklist approximately two weeks after official acceptance into a program.

Prior to the official hire date, McLaren Northern Graduate Medical Education trainees are required to:

  • Pass a background check
  • Pass a drug screen
  • Provide or obtain required immunizations (TB test, Flu shot)
  • Be eligible for licensure in the State of Michigan as a physician with license effective July 1 (or hire date for those who start at a later date)
  • Provide a copy of diploma with DO or MD degree and ECFMG certificate with proof of medical degree (if applicable)

COVID-19 Vaccines:

McLaren Health Care complies with the healthcare worker vaccine mandate, which requires all workers, including residents, fellows, and visiting learners, to be fully vaccinated as of March 15, 2022. If you have specific questions related to the program you are interested in applying to, please contact the program’s Academic Program Administrator.

McLaren Northern programs participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) and require applicants to apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

All communication during the application process until the official program match days shall occur through the interview platform only. Applicants should not contact the program in-person or by phone, except as requested by the program.

All applicants must be authorized to work in the USA, or must be a Canadian citizen or Canadian permanent resident who is eligible for J-1 visa sponsorship.

All interviews are held as virtual only.
