Raising money to support patients’ journeys through hospice
The 24th Annual Nancy Streber Golf Classic took place on Mother’s Day weekend, raising more than $11,000 for McLaren Hospice.
“McLaren Hospice is honored to be the beneficiary of this event, as well as to have cared for patients who learned about McLaren Hospice because of it,” said Cindy Tomlinson, MSN, RN, Vice President of Hospice at McLaren Health Management Group. “Through support from events like the Nancy Streber Memorial Golf Classic, we can help provide non-reimbursed services such as music therapy and bereavement support programs to the patients and families who need it.”
Thirty years ago, Nancy and Paul Streber made the difficult decision to move Nancy’s father into their home in Almont while he battled cancer. They wanted him to be around his loved ones and be able to receive care around the clock with the help of a hospice team. Five years after his passing, Nancy also passed away, but not before she requested her family to give back to the people who cared for her father during their family’s toughest times. In 1997, two years after Nancy’s passing, Dave Streber and his family established the Nancy Streber Memorial Golf Classic in honor of his mother’s legacy and wishes. Since then the event has been hosted every year on Mother’s Day weekend in Romeo, Michigan.
The Nancy Streber Memorial Golf Classic not only keeps Nancy’s memory alive, but also goes towards helping the individuals in hospice care today. All proceeds from the event help support the end-of-life care services and programs patients receive while in McLaren Hospice care.
While this event was held virtually last year due to the pandemic, that didn’t stop the Streber family and the community from raising money in honor of Nancy’s wishes. This year, the event was held at the Heather Hills Golf Course with social distancing and restrictions in place for everyone’s safety. With the funds raised from the sold-out event, donations made in Nancy’s name over the past two decades is more than $100,000.
“On behalf of everyone at McLaren Hospice, we extend a special thanks to Dave and his family for organizing this event year after year,” said Tomlinson. “We are eternally grateful for their continued generosity, as well as the many sponsors, golfers, and volunteers that make this event possible.” McLaren also recognizes Dean Wolfe, Melissa Hamilton, Tami Streber, Skye Miller, Heather Hills staff, Hilary Rayl, and Angie Kosek for their support of the event.
As a nonprofit organization, McLaren Hospice relies on the donations and community to help care for terminally ill patients, regardless of their ability to pay. While the outing has concluded, individuals can always donate to McLaren Hospice at www.mclaren.org/hospice.
