Lace up your running shoes and join Karmanos Cancer Institute's Office of Cancer Health Equity & Community Engagement (OCHECE) as they partner with WeRun313 to celebrate their Two Mile Tuesday 2022 season opener. Running starts at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, at Yum Village, located at 6500 Woodward in Detroit.
As part of the celebration, WeRun313 has a DJ, fitness apparel vendors and prize drawings lined up for participants to enjoy. The first 30 people to register and attend the first Two Mile Tuesday of the season will receive a free T-shirt and be entered into a gift card drawing.
Participants of every ability will be engaged during the event. You do not have to be a runner to participate − you can be a beginner, a walker or just a supporter. Register online today at bit.ly/twomiletuesday.
WeRun313 is Michigan's fastest-growing run club and is one of the country's largest African American centric running clubs. The founders, Lance Woods and Joe Robinson, represent a concerted effort to diversify running as a sport and a culture. Their dream and efforts do not go unnoticed, as the run club continues to grow and the pair have received recognition, including the Spirit of Detroit Award in 2019. This award highlights people and organizations for “outstanding achievement or service to the citizens of Detroit.”
Residents of Detroit are nearly twice as likely to die from a cardiovascular disease than Americans in other cities. WeRun313 hopes to shift the statistics by encouraging runners of all ages and levels of experience to join the run club.
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), around 18% of cancers and 16% of deaths due to cancer in the U.S. are related to health concerns such as excess body weight, lack of physical activity, alcohol use, or poor nutrition. Developing cancer could potentially be avoided by following these ACS recommendations.
There is also growing evidence that diet, physical activity, and related factors can help some cancer survivors live longer, lower their risk of cancer returning (or of new cancer developing) and limit side effects of cancer treatment. Physical activity can also lower cancer survivors’ risk of developing other serious diseases and improve their overall health and wellness.
