Bryan Shumaker, MD, Board-certified Urologist and Astronomy enthusiast, has joined McLaren Northern Michigan Urology.
With nearly 40 years of medical experience, Dr. Shumaker is knowledgeable in all areas of urology. He sees patients from newborn through adult years for most urology conditions and surgeries. He received his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and completed his residency at Wayne State University School of Medicine.
“I am excited to start practicing medicine with McLaren Northern Michigan. I love the interaction and relationships that I build with my patients and staff. It is my favorite part of medicine,” stated Dr. Shumaker.
His love of medicine began during his undergraduate years at Wayne State University. Dr. Shumaker built the first laser communications device and continued his interest in optical lasers as a human treatment modality. As an academic urologist, he found a special interest in using photoactive dyes and laser light to treat cancer. He helped develop and build a unique fluorescent dye sensing laser device which not only helped patients diagnostically and therapeutically, but contributed to the emerging fields of remote sensing and adaptive optics.
In addition to a comprehensive medical career, Dr. Shumaker has dedicated his time to Astronomy. He is a NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador doing outreach astronomy education, and is president of Northern Michigan Astronomy Club that supplies the oversight, training, and astronomy programming for the International Dark Sky Park at the Headlands in Mackinac City. The International Astronomical Union has designated asteroid 513528 Bryanshumaker in his honor. He also is an adjunct Professor, Dept. of Physics (Astronomy) at Oakland University.
Dr. Shumaker resides in Boyne City with his wife, two Cairn terriers, and has three grown children and six grandchildren. He enjoys flying, ham radio, and astronomy among his many interests.
