McLaren Port Huron, St. Clair County’s largest and busiest emergency department, have launched online scheduling for patients seeking non-life-threatening emergency care in the hospital’s ER.
For patients looking to minimize their wait time in the ER, visiting mclaren.org/porthuron will let them view all available upcoming treatment times and register for a time that fits their schedule, allowing them to wait at home until their time arrives.
“Online registration provides patients with a great option for patients to plan and organize their care for less severe conditions, such as intense coughs or acute orthopedic injuries,” said Dr. John Brooks, McLaren Port Huron Chief Medical Officer. “This is certainly not a replacement for calling 911 and the timely, potentially lifesaving care provide by EMTs, though making this capability available to our patients can give them more control in their care and support a more comfortable and convenient experience, enhancing the likelihood they will seek the care they need when they need it.”
Online check-ins, though, are not a replacement for calling 911 in a life-threatening medical emergency.
All online check-ins are reviewed and evaluated by medical professionals for symptoms that may indicate a severe condition. Patients experiencing a potentially serious emergency are contacted directly and advised to call 911 or to go to their nearest emergency department. Symptoms such as chest pains, severe abdominal pain, a major injury or a trauma associated with loss of consciousness, or a potential pregnancy complication.
The McLaren Port Huron emergency department is the only nationally verified trauma center within St. Clair County. The hospital has further earned advanced accreditations, certifying that its providers can care for patients experiencing the most serious of medical emergencies. This includes its designation as the area’s only primary stroke center and operating an advanced, comprehensive heart center.
