McLaren Lapeer Region Transitional Care Unit Ranks Among Region’s Best Nursing Homes

McLaren Lapeer Region, which maintains a continuum of care for those patients recovering from the most acute conditions through its Transitional Care Unit, has been named to U.S. News & World Report’s 2025 Best Nursing Homes, ranking it among the best in the metro area.

A 19-bed skilled nursing unit, the aim of the Transitional Care Unit is to admit patients following their treatment from a complex or particularly severe condition requiring an extended recovery — such as a stroke, traumatic injury, or acute respiratory illness — to continue progressing in their rehabilitation until they can be safely discharged to their home.

Analyzing a broad range of safety, quality, and outcome clinical metrics, while taking into account staffing levels and use of medications, the publication evaluated 152 nursing homes in the metro Detroit area, naming those that earned perfect scores to its Best Nursing Homes list.

“We are deeply grateful for this recognition, which is a testament to the focused efforts by our team to continuously enhance the level of care provided to our patients,” said Tim Vargas, McLaren Lapeer Region President and CEO. “This achievement is confirmation that those efforts have had impactful and meaningful benefits to our patients, and we will use that as validation as we continue to evolve the unit to continuing meeting the needs of those we serve.”

Unique to a traditional hospital setting, McLaren Lapeer Region’s TCU provides patients with more relaxed, home-like atmosphere and socialization areas for visitations and dining.

In this setting, patients are able to be led through physical, occupational, and speech therapies, as well as provided with a range of specialty services to support their recovery and have access to around the clock emergency care.
