McLaren Northern Michigan recognized nationally for patient safety, heart care

McLaren Northern Michigan, part of McLaren Health Care and the 202-bed, Petoskey-based regional hospital serving 22 counties, has been recognized by Healthgrades, a nationwide leader in consumer health care information and ratings, for its proficiency in providing a range of specialty care services and for the safe environment in which that care is administered.

From Healthgrades, the team at McLaren Northern Michigan was recognized with:

  • Patient Safety Excellence Award 2023
  • America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care 2023
  • America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention 2023
  • Pulmonary Care Excellence Award 2023

“It’s an honor to earn these awards as it further validates the commitment, dedication, and effort our team strives to provide for every patient that arrives through our doors,” said Chad Grant, McLaren Health Care Chief Operating Officer and McLaren Northern Michigan Interim President and CEO. “Though they’re a compliment to receive, the true benefits of these recognitions are that they add to our community’s confidence in the high level of skilled care available to them.”

Potentially lifesaving care, McLaren Northern Michigan earned recognition for its team’s “superior clinical outcomes” in heart bypass surgery, heart attack treatment, heart failure treatments, and heart valve surgery (Cardiac Care); angioplasty with stent (Coronary Intervention); and treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and pneumonia (Pulmonary Care Excellence Award).

In the team’s process of providing that care, it demonstrated measurable excellence in preventing infections, medical errors, and other complications (Patient Safety Excellence Award).

“For our patients receiving care in any of our facilities, maintaining a safe environment in which to administer that care is as much a priority as the care itself,” said Dr. Justin Klamerus, McLaren Health Care Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer. “I commend the clinical teams at McLaren Northern Michigan for their diligence and devotion to their patients, the level of which ensures they are provided with the best possible clinical outcome.”

Measuring and scoring patients’ clinical care and outcomes, overall patient safety and experience alongside other quality measurements as the basis of its criteria, Healthgrades compared more than 4,400 hospitals across the United States. With these Healthgrades recognitions, McLaren Northern Michigan ranks among the top providers in the country.

This is the latest in a successive string of distinctions recognizing McLaren Northern Michigan and the quality of its care, recently having earned a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, placing the hospital among the top 10 percent across the nation.

McLaren Northern Michigan also recently expanded its service offerings with the opening of the Justin A. Borra Behavioral Health Center at its Cheboygan Campus this summer, addressing a significant need for behavioral health services in the region.
