Joseph K. Weistroffer, MD, FAAOS, FAOA, has joined McLaren Northern Michigan Neurosciences, located at 560 West Mitchell Street, Suite 340, in Petoskey, MI.
Born and raised in St. Charles, Illinois, Dr. Weistroffer joined the Navy at age 17. Dr. Weistroffer attended medical school at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. He was a general practitioner taking care of US Navy divers and deployed submarine sailors for three years until he had the opportunity to train in orthopaedic surgery, specializing in the spine. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and completed a residency at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, CA, as well as a Spine Fellowship at the Twin Cities Spine Center in Minneapolis, MN.
Dr. Weistroffer realized he wanted to become a physician while flying F-14 Tomcats and thinking of leaving the Navy to work for the airlines. At this point, he challenged himself to find another way to impact people's lives.
“I was drawn to Petoskey and the surrounding region because of its beauty, and abundance of year-round indoor and outdoor activity,” said Dr. Weistroffer. “I appreciate the Northern Michigander's thoughtful and caring demeanor and agree with McLaren Northern Michigan’s vision to bring outstanding, compassionate care to the region.”
Dr. Weistroffer enjoys so many facets of spinal surgery, especially neck issues and stenosis. He has spent his career caring for all aspects of neck and back issues, from disc herniations and pinched nerves to slipping vertebrae (spondylolisthesis), crooked spines (scoliosis), and complex spinal reconstructions (repeat or add-on procedures).
Beyond spine surgery, Dr. Weistroffer makes the most of each day with his wife and enjoys reading, baking, dancing, kayaking and listening to music.
