What it means to be a Magnet hospital

A Magnet designated hospital is an organization that has been recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) after demonstrating excellence in patient care in 70 areas of focus throughout the entire hospital. Reaching this designation is the result of several years of preparation and longstanding commitments to nursing and patient care through quality and process improvements as well as interdisciplinary collaboration.

While Magnet is a benchmark for nursing excellence, exceptional patient care isn't just about nursing -- it's the responsibility and pride of every colleague of McLaren Northern Michigan. Magnet hospitals are committed to: the personal and professional growth of all colleagues, safety and patient privacy, sensitivity to the needs of our patients and visitors -- it all contributes to sustaining and improving the quality of our hospital.

What is the Magnet Recognition Program?

The Magnet Recognition Program was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association, to recognize healthcare organizations that provide the very best nursing care. It is the highest level of recognition that an organization can receive for quality nursing care. Magnet status is awarded to hospitals that demonstrate exemplary patient outcomes and satisfaction, continuously evaluate their nurse-patient ratios, and attract and retain "the best" from all disciplines.
